More: I'll be giving a lunch'n'learn (please bring your own brown bag lunch) about the intersection of academic environmental ethics and environmental not for profit activism on Thursday March 11, 2010 at 12:00 at the Ecology Action Centre. I've had a bunch of input from academics, but I'd love to hear about what the NFP sector thinks of my recommendations for strengthening both areas by improving dialogue.

Abstract:

Nourishing Praxis: Environmental Ethics and Activism
Dr. Lisa Kretz

Given the current ecological crisis, a method is needed for bringing 1.) the insights of theoretical environmental ethics and 2.) the practices of environmental activism together. Environmentalists who work against ecological destruction have much to gain from the arguments provided by theoretical environmental ethics, and environmental ethicists have much to gain from the knowledge of those whose primary work is environmental activism. I begin the task of constructing a method for bringing the two into conversation. I use the environmental issue of marine waste as a case study to show the virtues of the method I recommend for environmental praxis (praxis here meaning theory in practice/action). I argue that both environmental activists and environmental ethicists can benefit from what each brings to the table, making both activism and ethics stronger.

Please RSVP goodsmiles@ecologyaction.ca if you are planning on attending as space is limited, and I want to ensure everyone has a seat.
