Mining

There have been many mining misadventures in Nova Scotia. The most infamous is the Sydney coal mine. Currently, mining projects in Cape Breton, Hants County and Annapolis Royal are threatening the natural environment and mobilizing citizens to take action.

At the Annual Environmental Conference in Yarmouth in July 2006, delegates expressed the need to form a mining caucus in Nova Scotia. This group would coordinate actions and campaigns against mining development in the province. From the Cape Breton strip mines to the Avon Peninsula gympsum mine to the Digby Neck Mega-Quarry, citizens are concerned about the adverse environmental and health impacts of major mining developments.
