SACKVILLE RIVERS ASSOCIATION Executive Director
The SRA is an incorporated, registered charity, community environmental association responsible for the Sackville River Watershed in Sackville, Nova Scotia. It is a 21-year-old organization with initiatives in river remediation, trails development, experiential education, outreach, and scientific research. It has 3 full-time employees, 5-8 summer students, and 100 active volunteer members.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The SRA is seeking an energetic highly organized individual to assume the role of Executive Director. The individual will carry out a variety of duties, in a highly active but interesting environment. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors and will be supported in their duties by other SRA staff including a field supervisor, part-time bookkeeper, auditor, board secretary and a legal advisor.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:
Provide scientific oversight to projects from design to completion. Supervise Staff in carrying out field and office-based scientific studies. Maintaining communications and developing strong relationships with SRA Board, committees, volunteers and various external stakeholder organizations. Coordinate publication of SRA monthly newsletter and maintain SRA website. Attend, prepare for, and present at monthly Board meetings and membership meetings. Prepare grant and funding applications to support various research, education and staffing initiatives of the SRA. In coordination with bookkeeper, maintain accounts receivable, payables, bank deposits, and ensure funded projects stay within budgets. Communicate and develop solid relationships with various media organizations. Be credible and professional representative of the SRA for media communications. Prepare media releases for events and issues concerning the SRA.
Coordinate and assist in the completion of fieldwork with the watershed.
Manage SRA’s office and SRA staff on a day-to-day basis.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Minimum education: Bachelors degree in Biology, Environmental Studies, Management, or Geography/Geomatics. (Maters degree preferred). Have a strong knowledge of watershed planning, environmental education, fish habitat, restoration, data management, water quality and wetland protection. Have experience in preparing for and participating in stakeholder and public consultations with an ability to think strategically. Possess strong written communication skills (technical report writing and public relations/media writing). Proven ability to raise money (fundraising). Have strong basic statistical analysis skills. Experience in supervising staff and the ability to maintain productivity, produce field reports, and remain within project budgets. Possess strong computer skills and be familiar with a number of software packages including Microsoft Office, Access (or other database software), GIS (ArcGIS), desktop publishing (Publisher, Adobe, Corel, etc.), web page editing (e.g. FrontPage, Dreamweaver). Have the ability and willingness to travel throughout Nova Scotia and work irregular hours when deemed necessary.
ADDITIONAL (ADVANTAGEOUS) SKILLS:
Electro fishing, knowledge of environmental/regulatory frameworks, knowledge of environmental law, stream surveys, and botanical identification experience would be considered an asset.
SALARY:
Compensation will range from $40 - $45,000 and will be commensurate with experience.

Energy and Climate Change Coordinator
The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is a leading voice within the province of Nova Scotia on climate change and energy policy. The EAC promotes sustainable energy to meet environmental goals, while enhancing the economic development of Nova Scotian communities.
The Energy and Climate Change Coordinator will principally focus on energy and climate change policy in the electricity, industrial and building sectors. Responsibilities also include project development, coalition building, coordination and fundraising in cooperation with Atlantic Canadian partners, the EAC‘s Energy Issues Committee and energy project staff.
The coordinator reports to the Ecology Action Centre Energy Issues Committee (EIC).

Responsibilities Include
• Monitoring, researching and shaping climate change and energy policy in Nova Scotia
• Communications through media, website and publications
• Participation in stakeholder consultations and advisory boards, including utility board interventions
• Coalition building
• Liaising with national, international and regional environmental organizations
• Identifying strategic opportunities to reduce GHG emissions
• Managing project finances, volunteer activities and fundraising
• Project oversight and development
• Identifying fundraising opportunities for the position
• Participating in and supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre.
Skills and Experience
• Previous experience in climate change and energy policy
• Knowledge of provincial politics
• Knowledge of climate change, demand side management, energy efficiency, and renewable energy issues
• Proven ability to write media releases and liaise with the media
• Proven campaigning and strategic thinking skills
• Effective at networking and coalition-building
• Ability to work under deadlines and self-motivated
• Fundraising and grant-writing experience
• Strong time management skills and an ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks
• Excellent written and oral communications skills
• Masters degree or equivalent work related experience
Start: late March 2010
Wage: $40,000 per annum
Four weeks paid vacation
