Paid Water Intern
Paid Internship Position
Water Department
Clean Nova Scotia
Title: Development of a Standard Methodology for the Assessment of Freshwater Fish Habitat in Nova Scotia
Dates (flexible): September 2011 – Spring 2012
*This position is dependent on the receipt of funding. If CNS doesn’t receive the expected funding, we would be interested in discussing possible volunteer internship positions and/or related thesis work with interested students.
Clean Nova Scotia (www.clean.ns.ca) is a non-profit environmental organization now proudly in its twenty-third year. Our motto of “Inspiring Environmental Change” encourages the creation of a cleaner, healthier environment by informing, enabling, and inspiring Nova Scotians to respect and consider the environment in all their choices. Our original focal point was waste reduction, and we played an integral role in assisting the province to achieve its goal of 50% waste diversion. Over time we have evolved and expanded, and now offer comprehensive and diverse environmental programming in the strategic areas of Climate Change & Energy Efficiency, Health & Community, Transportation, Waste Reduction, and Water Protection. Our expertise, passion, independence and willingness to collaborate have resulted in a successful track record of developing and delivering environmental programs. In 2006 we developed a stream restoration program, and have since conducted restoration on five streams within the HRM. In conjunction with our restoration projects, we have conducted public outreach and education to raise awareness of the human impacts on water, and to foster stewardship.
Description
There are numerous organizations in Nova Scotia with interests in aquatic environments. Groups rely on various methodologies to assess the health and quality of fish habitat. Some groups have adopted approaches developed in other areas of North America.
The variables used to evaluate aquatic habitats are similar, but vary greatly when it comes to habitat quality ratings. Varied approaches result in a lack of consistency, and many have little practical application in the lakes and streams of Nova Scotia, due to differences in species or habitat adaptations.
These differences make it difficult to compare data amongst groups and sites and, more importantly, distort our understanding of fish populations and habitat quality. The goal of this project is to establish the most appropriate fish habitat evaluation variables and their quality curves for use in Nova Scotia.
The specific objectives are to:
1. Research, review and evaluate existing habitat survey variables and investigate which are most suitable for use in Nova Scotia and the appropriate values for their use in habitat quality rating.
2. Link to related methodologies that are developed or developing in Nova Scotia so as not to duplicate and to make a complete package in the areas of: riparian assessment, water quality testing, invertebrate monitoring, and habitat connectivity assessment.
3. Identify and fill gaps that result in the distortion of habitat assessment.
4. Revise methodologies to accurately assess Nova Scotia fish habitat.
5. Field-test the revised method to confirm data validity and reliability.
6. Work with stakeholders (community groups, fish and water experts) to gain consensus on the adoption of a common methodology that is repeatable and suitable for community group use. The following outcomes are anticipated as a result of this project:
• A methodology that accurately measures the quality of fish habitat in Nova Scotia for consistency in environmental assessment, aquatic habitat protection, assessment of poor practices impacts, and basis for restoration planning;
• Dissemination of information on the new methodology, and why it is more suitable than those previously used;
• Wide acceptance and adoption of the recommended methodology;
• Improved consistency in data collected by different groups.
Project Mentor: Bob Rutherford, BSc, MA, MPM

Bob is well versed in community-based planning and management approaches, and in program design, development, and implementation. He is the Nova Scotia Salmon Association / Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation's Adopt-A-Stream program biologist and is a member of numerous other water-based community groups (including Sackville Rivers Association, Dartmouth Area Watersheds Network, Saint Mary's University's Community Based Environmental Monitoring Network, and Oathill Lake Conservation Society). Bob is very well respected and is among the top experts on fish and aquatic habitats in the province.
Background required: Bachelor's Degree in Biology or similar; relevant experience/research; experience in computer programming/analyses an asset. Candidates must be between the ages of 22 and 30.

The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is a leading voice in Nova Scotia on environmental issues. The TRAX project at the EAC is working alongside Community Transit - Nova Scotia (formerly Nova Scotia Community Based Transportation Association) to assess the state of public transportation services offered in Nova Scotia. This project is funded through the Nova Scotia Transit Research Incentive Program (NS-TRIP).

Presently, unless residents of Nova Scotia live within HRM, most are relegated to dependence on the private automobile. • A schematic diagram outlining existing transportation service provision including public transit, private bus and vanpool systems
• A business case study detailing why Nova Scotia needs a central transportation information clearinghouse
• A report outlining options that have been used to provide affordable, accessible transportation services in other jurisdictions

In reaching these deliverables, the Project Coordinator will need to:
• Liaise with transportation service providers throughout Nova Scotia
• Conduct surveys with transportation service users
• Develop recommendations
• Report to project partners. Direct reporting will be to a Transportation Issues staff person at the Ecology Action Centre
• Research transportation service provision in other jurisdictions
• Prepare and publicly present the final report

Skills and Experience:

• Experience making schematic diagrams—experience with GIS an asset
• Knowledge of Nova Scotia transportation systems
• Experience developing business model scenarios; persuasive writing

• Research skills, including proficiency with citations

Researcher - Community Gardens Heavy Metal Study
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is a leading voice in Nova Scotia on environmental issues. We work on environmental education and advocacy and “action” is our middle name. We are looking for a science graduate with knowledge of soil chemistry, strong laboratory, analytical & communication skills, and an interest in urban agriculture for a six month contract as Researcher for the Community Gardens Heavy Metal Study.
Overview:
The growing interest in urban agriculture and the local supply of food has led to a proliferation of small-scale community and backyard gardens in urban areas. While this trend has had many positive impacts, the presence of soil contaminants in urban soils has led to questions as to the potential risk of consuming fruits and vegetables grown in urban gardens. The EAC is partnering with Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) and the Nova Scotia Environmental Network (NSEN) to undertake a study that will assess levels of lead in garden soils of HRM.

As the lead on the heavy metal study, the Researcher will be responsible for planning and executing the study, and completing a final report. Specific activities include developing research methodology, collecting samples, completing a literature review, participating in lab analysis, and exploring considerations for policy development.

The Researcher will report to staff at the Urban Garden Project of the EAC and will collaborate closely with the EAC/NSAC/HRM/NSEN Advisory Committee for the Community Gardens Heavy Metal Study.
